I used Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and field guide descriptions of Mikado pheasant habitat to estimate land availability within Taiwan between the elevations of 1600 and 3200 m.

Of the 6477 square kilometers available island-wide, 2542 square kilometers are protected in reserves such as Yushan National Park.
