TELEMETRY TOOLS

These three programs are Share-ware programs developed by scientists for their own use and now available to others in the field. Of course it is only proper to acknowledge the use of these programs in publications -- it gives credit to the developers and helps other scientists analyze their own data.

TELEM88

is most useful for triangulating telemetry data. It has graphing and plotting capacity but is user unfriendly. I recommend using Calhome or Arc/View for graphics. If you run TELEM88 through Windows 95 or 98, some extra garbage will appear on the screen, but the program works fine. This program will not work unless you are meticulous about your input data: in the right columns, in the right format, and in increasing order (animal type, animal number, dates, and station locations).

The author requests a $20 donation for advice on how to run the program: JOHN COLEMAN, Dept. of Wildlife Ecology, Russell Labs, U. of Wisconsin, Madison, WI 53706, Tel: (608) 262-1984 or (608) 238-9642

CALHOME

produces amazingly quick analyses of Home Range: Minimum Convex Polygon, Harmonic Mean, Adaptive Kernal and Bivariate Normal. It also produces very quick plots. With newer printers, expect compatibility problems with printing the plots. Programs that capture screens and windows will be helpful.

The author requests that users register, if only to be notified of updated versions: JOHN G. KIE, Forestry Sciences Lab, 2081 East Sierra Avenue, Fresno, CA 93710, (209) 487-5589

NOREMARK

uses mark-resighting data to estimate population size.

It was developed by: GARY C. WHITE, Dept. of Fishery and Wildlife, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523, Tel: (303)491-6678, Internet: gwhite@picea.cfnr.Colostate.edu (209) 487-5589
